Bears Close Keji Seaside

Just as national parks begin to reopen, Kejimkujik Seaside Park is shutting down.

Parks Canada decided to close the popular hiking trail in Port Joli because of increased bear activity in the area.

The move is intended to keep distance between bears and humans for everyone’s safety.

Bears are attracted to the seaside park because the habitat is largely undisturbed and the food is plentiful.

Officials say the increase in bear activity at this time of year is not unusual and the animals will likely move away from the shore as the food supply becomes more plentiful in the forests.

The inland Kejimkujik National Park is open for day trips hiking and fishing, but camping won’t open until late June, at the earliest.

Parks Canada will keep an eye on the bears and will update the public when they feel it is safe to reopen Keji Seaside.
