Truck Driving Into River Turns Out OK

A 59-year-old woman is safe and sound after the truck she was in drove into the Mersey River.

Queens District RCMP members responded to a call at 10:20 Sunday morning that a pick-up truck had driven off of Highway 8 into the Mersey River, near Milton.

The 65-year-old male driver of the vehicle was able to swim to shore, however, the 59-year-old female passenger was not and had difficulty keeping her head out of the water.

RCMP members, EHS and the volunteer fire department quickly assessed the situation and determined the female passenger’s condition was worsening due to the cold water.

An RCMP member tied a rope around his waist and swam out to the woman using a paddle board from a nearby residence.

The RCMP member and woman were pulled to shore by the other first responders.

The woman and the driver of the vehicle were transported to hospital where the woman was treated with non-life threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
