Forest Fire Burns Five Hectares

Several crews responded to a Forest Fire outside Milton on Sunday.

Trucks were dispatched from Liverpool, North Greenfield and Port Medway to put out five hectares along the power lines around 1:30pm.

Thirty local firefighters were joined by nine personnel and a helicopter from the Department of Lands and Forestry.

Crews had to use ATVs to reach the fire, which was burning approximately three kilometres from the Mersey Lodge.

John Long, a Captain with the Liverpool Fire Department says he wasn’t clear what caused the fire but the high power lines overhead could have been involved.

“Sometimes it happens, a tree just touches a wire. I didn’t hear of any power outages so I wouldn’t say any lines broke. Sometimes that happens.”

Long says the fire was knocked down early Sunday evening and crews left the scene around 8:00pm.

A spokesperson for the Department of Lands and Foresty says the cause of the fire is still unknown.

The department is reminding people that a “No Burn” restriction on open fires is in effect to protect Nova Scotia’s forests during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Open domestic fires are prohibited for any purpose in woods or within 1,000 feet of woods in any part of the province and will be enforced until May 15, 2020.
