Trestle Trail bridge fix in the works

It’s been a long trek to get the Trestle Trail bridge reopened, but work will soon begin to restore the once popular path.

The major work needed is to the concrete piers and pillars, which are in various states of decay. Brian Hatt, president of Rails to Trails said the group has been working since before it’s closure in 2014 to get repairs underway.

After years of work getting assessments and repair plans drawn up, the tenders were called in March to find a contractor to do the work. Once the proposals are reviewed, expects work will get underway soon and hopes to see a late summer completion.

The Region of Queens has put in $83,000, the Murphy Foundation $250,000 and the remainder from the province of Nova Scotia. Eventually the plan is to connect the bridge to a larger multi-use trail network that runs through the province. Hatt says they are looking at several options to connect the remainder of trail from Brooklyn to Hunts Point.
