First pride spiel in Liverpool a success

Colourful outfits, opera singers and drag queens took over the ice at the Liverpool Curling Club on Jan. 5 for the first and likely annual pride spiel.

The event was to show support to the LGBTQ community, something that has been on the club’s mind for over a year.

While unsure what to expect when the event was first announced, organizer Jenn Chase said it couldn’t have gone better.

“Everyone has been so happy about it and had a good time. It was a success for sure,” she said.

The spiel had all 12 team slots filled, with teams coming from all over the province, and plenty of positive feedback from the participants.

Next year’s Pride Speil is set for Jan. 11, and Chase says they are even discussing turning it into a two day event.

With the first event of 2019 finished, the club is already preparing for the next. On Jan. 11 they are hosting a fun curl, while in Feb the annual Curl for Cancer will return to the ice.
