Clear cutting in Queens draws concern

A proposed clear cut in Queens County is drawing concern from the Ecology action Centre

919 hectares in 69 plots are slated to be harvested, with a little over half of that being full harvest, in an area between Kejimkujik National Park and Dunraven Bog.

Raymond Plourde, Wilderness Coordinator for the Ecology Action Centre, said they area is an important ecological area for many at risk and endangered species such as the mainland moose.

Plourde adds the government has yet to respond to the Bill Lahey report, which outlines key recommendations on how to use the lands in Nova scotia to balance the economic, environmental and social impacts of forestry. He says until they respond in some way, clear cutting should be put on hold.

Plourde said he doesn’t feel the consultation process is transparent enough, nor does it create a strong way for Nova Scotian’s to voice their concern.

He Encourages the public to not only comment through DNR website, but to also contact MLA’s if they want to be heard.

The Lahey Report can be found here.
