LIVERPOOL, NS — September 21, 2026 — For five days this October, Liverpool becomes an international meeting place for theatre. From Mexico, Poland, Wales, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands, artists and productions will come to the Astor Theatre for the 17th biennial Liverpool International Theatre Festival, October 14–18.

Alongside the competitive productions, audiences will find three special presentations: a film from Uganda, Bard to the Bone, a comedic and informative look at Shakespeare, and an interactive conversation with multi-award-winning Egyptian actor and director Eslam Aswad.

The festival opens Wednesday, October 14 with its traditional Parade of Flags, introducing the visiting groups and celebrating the countries represented at LITF. The opening also features a new musical theatre cabaret, There’s Something in the Water, created especially for the festival.

“LITF is about much more than what happens on the Astor Theatre stage,” says Deborah Raddall, Marketing Chair for LITF 2026. “It’s the people who come here, the people who welcome them, and the connections that happen when the world meets a small Nova Scotia community.”

LITF has been volunteer-run since 1992, with local hosts, drivers and volunteers helping bring the festival together and welcoming international performers and delegates to Liverpool.

For those who have never attended LITF, Raddall says there is no need to be a theatre expert.

“You don’t have to know anything about theatre to enjoy LITF. Come for a particular play, discover something you wouldn’t normally see, make a day of it. Or come for the whole thing!”

The festival’s competitive productions will be adjudicated by Jennifer Scott-Reid, with the distinctive JesterFish awards created each year by a Queens County, Nova Scotia artist. For 2026, Liverpool artist Scott Slessor has created the individualized awards.

Audiences can purchase tickets to individual performances or choose a festival pass and experience LITF throughout the five-day event.
