(Rick Conrad \/ File)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Liverpool is getting new public housing in the next 12 months, the Nova Scotia government announced Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An eightplex is planned for land next to 183 and 185 Old Port Mouton Rd. The building will be modular housing, divided into eight separate residences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">John Lohr, Nova Scotia\u2019s minister of municipal affairs and housing, said in a news release Wednesday that it\u2019s part of 26 new modular housing units being built in the next 12 months in Shelburne, Digby, Wedgeport and Liverpool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lohr said it will provide affordable housing for up to 82 people. He said the province is going with modular housing to get the units built as quickly as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The new housing is a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom units, with 14 ground-floor units that will be barrier-free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The units will be affordable, with rents tied to income.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Region of Queens Mayor Darlene Norman said in an interview Wednesday that she\u2019s happy to see the province is building more public housing in Liverpool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think it\u2019s excellent. It is desperately needed throughout the entire province, so, pleased to see that the province is now looking at (the) western (end of the province) and that we will be getting one eightplex.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Norman said provincial officials told her on Tuesday that 77 people are currently waiting for public housing in the Liverpool area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u201cIt will move quickly and (be) a much needed relief,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I know people have been impatient as the government has been announcing units in other areas, bu they\u2019ve been going zone by zone and now we\u2019re in the western zone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSo they\u2019re basically already designed. They\u2019re very nice. They\u2019re four units on the bottom, and the four bottom units will be totally accessible and there are four units on the top.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The province is investing $11.8 million to build the 26 units in the four communities.
