The Better Business Bureau Warns Public About Company Using Charity’s Name Without Permission

Halifax, NS April 13th, 2017 –  BBB Serving the Atlantic Provinces is warning both the public and businesses about a company using a charity’s name without permission to solicit advertisting for coupon books. “Chisholm Services for Children” is a not for profit organization that specializes in early childhood intervention. They have reported to BBB that an Australian company called “Spot On Coupons” has used their logo and a claim of charity donation to drive sales.

The solicitation form states that "… partial proceeds go to the local charity to help fund and support their programs”. Chisholm Services for Children states that while they were approached about this partnership, they declined and have not given permission to use their name or logo.

“Using a company’s logo without their consent is considered a trademark violation” says BBB’s CEO, Peter Moorhouse. BBB is reminding businesses and the public that using an organization’s logo, name, or any branding material without their agreement is not permitted in any case.

If you suspect a trademark violation or unauthorized fundraising activity, you can inquire with BBB to verify authenticity, and report any fraudulent activity to Scam Tracker, a research and reporting tool on BBB’s website.
